Purpose of Single Target Search Light Signal
These signals can be placed at the beginning of a railway ‘BLOCK’ (a section of track) to indicate if the route ahead is clear and safe to proceed. Target lights are often placed in groups along a railway corridor between two stations (or signal boxes). They are positioned as DISTANT, HOME and STARTING SIGNAL.

DISTANT SIGNAL (Amber/Green) – This signal tells the driver about the upcoming signals at the Station ahead. When at Amber, this will indicate that at least one signal (Home or Starting) is at Red. When at Green, the Driver can proceed into the station, or through for Express services.

HOME SIGNAL (Red/Green) – This signal tells the driver whether they are permitted to enter the section of track at the Station.

STARTING SIGNAL/HOME DEPARTURE (Red/Green) – This signal tells the driver whether they are permitted to leave the controlled area and proceed into the next Railway Block/Corridor. This is usually positioned at the end of a Station.
